Rent-to-own News - APRO Rental Roundtable offers three track RTO education

July 20, 2010

Chuck Simms leads a room of more than 200 rental dealers Tuesday.
The Association of Professional Rental Organizations today, kicked off the educational component of its annual convention and trade show with a new three-track training program meant to help rent to own professionals at a variety levels take their careers to new heights.

Attendees today broke into three groups -- store-level employees/managers, mid-level/multiple store managers and store owners/top-level managers -- to receive specialized training from some of the foremost names in the rental purchase industry.

More than 200 Rental Roundtable attendees returned to the main ballroom for training day wrap up lead by industry vet and Remco founder Chuck Sims. As Remco’s CEO, Sims developed a professional management team that expanded the company to more than 100 stores by 1990. In 1991, he sold Remco to pursue other interests. Sims is a graduate of the American Management Association’s Management Course for Presidents and is a co-founder of APRO.

Talks in the wrap up, facilitated by electronic audience surveys, centered on how the current economy is impacting RTO, legislative initiatives, management, social media promotion and hiring styles.

Grandville Jett, a store manager for one of Mena, Arkansas-based Don's E-Z Pay's five store locations, took the one-store manager's track led by Countryside Rent to Own President Mike Tissot. Jett said the hands on information would prove most useful on a day to day basis in his store.

"There was just a ton of information especially on new hires and customer qualifications," Jett said. "But what I most liked was Mike's emphasis on building customer rapport. That's just something you just don't hear enough about but you need to develop everyday."

Rental Roundtable sponsored by Coaster Furniture and LG Electronics.

Education seminars continue through the afternoon on topics ranging from industry legal update, social marketing, health care legislation, fourth quarter budgeting and tracking and leadership.

Tonight the APRO Convention moves to historic Churchill Downs for a special gala cocktail reception.

The Churchill Downs outing is sponsored by RentDirect Nationwide.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
