Rent-to-own News - Rent One managers praised in Glenn Shepard newsletter

Last year, Rent One Manager Gina Shelton won the 2010 Glenn Shepard Award for Excellence in Management & Leadership after the organization fielded nominations from across the continent.

Yesterday, Shelton and her regional manager, Dusty Ray, were featured in Glenn Shepard's Weekly Newsletter as setting an example of the "abundance mentality" at work in today's workforce.

Excerpt from Shepard's newsletter:

"Why the Rich Aren’t Getting Rich at Your Expense

People with a scarcity mentality have difficulty sharing credit, power, and recognition. They often have a hard time celebrating other people’s successes, because they believe – consciously or not – that it somehow takes away from their own.

You’ll see it in employees who feel threatened when others are recognized for achievement. This is tied to their feelings of low self-worth and poor self-esteem.

Successful managers must have an Abundance Mentality, which requires high self-worth, strong self-esteem, and being secure in themselves. They know there’s enough credit to go around and don’t feel threatened by the success of their subordinates.

Last November, we asked my subscribers to nominate an employee for the 2010 Glenn Shepard Award for Excellence in Management & Leadership. We received nominations from California to Canada, but the submission my team unanimously picked came from Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

The winner was Gina Shelton of Rent One.

While her accomplishments were extremely impressive, it was how far her district manager, Dusty Ray, went in nominating her that put her over the top.

He based his nomination on the seven steps in John  Maxwell’s Success - One Day at a Time, and wrote:

— She makes commitments to grow daily without fear of failing.

— She values the process more than the event without fear of change.

— She doesn't wait for my inspiration. She motivates herself through her kids and fun store themes.

— She is willing to sacrifice pleasure for opportunity as she puts in countless hours doing what needs to be done for clients and her team.

— She has learned to dream big rather than being comfortable.

— Gina isn't a sissy.

— She's dedicated and takes initiative when others do not.

Gina won a copy of How to Be the Employee Your Company Can’t Live Without on DVD  complete with a new DVD player, for embodying the principles I teach in that program, and two tickets to a sold out Garth Brooks concert.

While Dusty's nomination of Gina said a lot about her, it also said a lot about him. It said that he has integrity, the high level of self-confidence needed to give credit to others, and an Abundance Mentality – qualities every leader must have.

Then last month Rebecca received another email from Dusty. This time, he was the one who had won an award – District Manager of the Year.

Coincidence? Hardly. These two events go hand in hand.

And there’s more.

The company had an absolutely phenomenal year in 2010, right in the middle of this Great Recession that the media kept trying to convince us was so bad that no one was making money.

Gina did well, which led to her boss doing well, which led to their company doing well.

Successful people have an Abundance Mentality. And when they do, it ends in a Win-Win situation."

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
