Rent-to-own News - Pennsylvania rental dealers continue charitable tradition

May 2, 2011

The Pennsylvania Association of Rental Dealers (PARD) concluded their recent annual meeting by giving generous support to Claysburg Kimmel Elementary School. Carrying on the “Computers for Kidz” program started in 2010, PARD provided the school with promethean boards and projectors – a donation totaling more than $5,000.

The PARD is a nonprofit trade association that acts as the voice for the rent-to-own industry in Pennsylvania. Every year, the organization contacts a recommended school in the state that is in need of basic computer equipment and other technology. PARD members then review the school’s wish list and decide on several requested items to provide.

“Donating is important to us because we want to support and give back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Sandi Frye, PARD president and Premier Rental-Purchase franchise owner. “The way technology is today, even kindergarten students are learning on computers. Our goal is to help those schools that don’t receive adequate funding to be able to keep up with technology for the good of their students.”

“Our ‘Computers for Kidz’ program is not only an investment in the community, but it’s a promise to continually encourage students and improve education,” said Scott McHale, ColorTyme franchisee and PARD’s newly elected secretary. “I think the donation will improve the way students learn today and help open doors for them in the future.”

For next year’s “Computer for Kidz” donation, PARD members voted to provide aid to a school in Philadelphia.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
