Rent-to-own News - ColorTyme's Gary and Jutta Hughes honored by Boys and Girls Club

May 9, 2011

Gary and Jutta Hughes

For more than 16 years, Gary Hughes, a distinguished ColorTyme franchisee, and his wife, Jutta, have been influential members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley. Recently, the couple was recognized at the fourth annual Breakfast for Kids fundraiser where they received the Don Poe Community Spirit Award – an honor acknowledging their work in the community and dedication to service.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley never turns a child away because of financial hardship,” said Jon Evans, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley. “Because of the outstanding commitment and generous support we receive from Gary and Jutta Hughes, we are able to continue to live up to that promise and meet the needs of every child in our community.”

The Hughes’ have maintained their support to the Boys and Girls Clubs for many years. Soon after becoming involved with the local organization in 1995, Gary became a member of the Board of Directors. When Gary’s term ended in 2003, Jutta took over his seat and has since chaired the annual auction three times. She continues to assist with the event each year, while Gary serves as a member of the organization’s endowment board and investment committee.

In 2005, they launched a program called the “ColorTyme Kids” which provides scholarships to send kids to camp and cover Boys & Girls Club membership costs. The Hughes’ have provided 3,665 scholarships over the last six years.

“In our business, we see many children who do without, and these are the kids I wanted to help,” said Gary. “I’ve learned there are so many great kids who truly want to grow and develop if only given a chance. I really believe in supporting the part of the community that your business is involved in.”

Within the ColorTyme community, Gary Hughes is respected as a top performer and industry leader. He has held a Top Ten store ranking 16 of the last 17 years and has owned the highest volume ColorTyme location for six straight years, establishing a new benchmark and award level for the system. Gary is a former APRO Dealer of the Year and has served as Chairman of the ColorTyme Franchise Advisory Council. In 2010, he was hailed as a “Most Valuable Player” by Multi-Unit Franchisee Magazine.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
