This Rent to Own Audio Podcast brought to you by APRO's RTOHQ.org

Dan Fisher is the owner of four Majik Rent-To-Own stores in Lancaster, York and Harrisburg Pennsylvania.

Fisher got his start in rent-to-own in 1984 when his father -- who owned a video rental store -- started allowing customers to rent-to-own VCR's.

"We wanted to help our customers own a VCR and back then VRS were $500," Fisher said, "and the fact is, the more people who owned VCRS the better our video rental business was going to be and we thought it was important to help them to own those VCRs. Eventually people wanted more and more products and as the demand increased we began to carry more items."

In this exclusive APRO podcast, Fisher discusses his involvement with the newly reorganized Pennsylvania Rental Dealers Association which has made great strides in educating the state Congress members about the rent-to-own transaction.

Last year, Fisher met with a legislative assistant to his Congressman at the APRO Legislative Conference. The effort eventually paid off with the Congressman signing on as one of the 99 co-sponsors of the Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement Act last session.

The experience has made Fisher a believer in participatory democracy.

"I would urge everyone to attend the APRO Legislative Conference, in the long run it benefits everyone," he said.

Fisher also discusses his company's successful venture into home staging.

Who Is Your Competition?

by Bill Keese

In order to expand your customer base, you can learn a lot by observing your competitors. But first, you need to figure out just who they are. If you think your only competition is the rent-to-own store down the street, you’re not considering the bigger picture. APRO’s executive director offers a big-picture perspective.

A Review of Online Customer Complaints

by Ed Winn III

While rent-to-own companies have not cornered the market on negative reviews posted on consumer complaint websites, it’s no surprise that there are cyberspace beefs against RTO. APRO’s general counsel reviews some of them in search of a pattern and he considers appropriate response to online complaints.
